Technical Notes: The oboe part is labeled "Oboe (Optional)". The French horn part is labeled "F Horn (Optional)". The bells part is labeled "Bells (Optional)". The percussion 1 part is labeled "Percussion 1 (Snare Drum, Bass Drum)". The percussion 2 part is labeled "Percussion 2 (Suspended Cymbal)". The arranger has added the following note: "Any one or more of there instruments will provide an adequate bass line." These instruments are: B Flat bass clarinet, E Flat baritone saxophone, trombone/baritone B.C./bassoon, baritone TC, and tuba. Teaching aids for the director: The 1st trumpet part in measures 3-6 should be played by a single player if possible, although additional players may be added for security if necessary. All trumpets should play beginning in measure 7. Careful attention to the percussion parts will add greatly to the overall effect. The bass drum should have no muffling and should always be allowed to ring freely. Brushes should be used on the snare drum from measures 11-57. If brushes are not available, lightweight sticks may be substituted playing near the edge of the drum head. The suspended cymbal is the be played with soft (preferably yarn) mallets. The bells should use medium plastic or acrylic mallets. At measure 57, the new tempo should be exactly half the previous tempo. The conductor might find it helpful to the players to beat measure 56 "in two" (i.e. as in cut-time) in order to prepare the band for the new tempo to come.
