Not only is this work a fine piece of original writing, but it also fits the need for a patriotic program number. James Curnow has intertwined his own thematic material with fragments of "America The Beautiful." The finale is a grandiose section the incoporates both themes.

The Symphonic Rhapsody for Concert Band utilizes many contrasting moods, styles, tempi and dynamics to capture the composers view of America, based on his many conducting trips that over the years have taken him "From sea to shining sea". Along with motifs taken from "America The Beautiful," an original theme has been woven to create a set of discriptive variations that reflect these many contrasting moods.
