The beautiful hym "In The Bleak Midwinter" was first published in "The English Hymnal" in 1906. Composed by Gustav Holst, the proper name for this tune, "Cranham", refers to the composer's birthplace.
The first statement of the tune is in E Flat major (measure 9) and accompanied by a simple countermelody. A modulation to F major (measure 25) signals the second statement. This final statement of the theme is combined with the melody of the introduction to create a bold, contrapuntal passage. The introductory theme serves as the basis for a brief coda at the conclusion of the arrangement.
