Estimated Performance Time: Technical Notes: The percussion part is marked for snare drum, bass drum, and crash cymbals. The beautiful hym "In The Bleak Midwinter" was first published in "The English Hymnal" in 1906. Composed by Gustav Holst, the proper name for this tune, "Cranham", refers to the composer's birthplace. The first statement of the tune is in E Flat major (measure 9) and accompanied by a simple countermelody. A modulation to F major (measure 25) signals the second statement. This final statement of the theme is combined with the melody of the introduction to create a bold, contrapuntal passage.
