Rock and roll, like the blues and rockabilly styles that spawned it, requires nothing more than a handful of chords and a driving beat to get its point across. This may be the one constant in the now 50 year history of this mongrel genre: whenever the music becomes too slick and ambitious - artistically, theatrically, and commercially - someone always comes along to kick it back to the basics. In the case of punk rock, that kick was particularly rude and, its partisans would say, badly needed.
