There are a few woods that come to mind when instrument builders start dreaming of an "ideal" instrument. Brazilian rosewood, Honduras mahogany, and Gabon ebony, for example.
Of course, all three woods are hard to get now, and will continue to get more expensive and more exclusive over the coming years.
Here at Folkcraft, we've obtained a small supply of Honduras mahogany, and we're putting it to good use, building dulcimers. We're not offering the Honduras mahogany on any of our stock instruments, or as a wood choice even for our Folkcraft or FolkRoots custom dulcimers.
Instead, we've created a line of "limited edition" dulcimers. The limited edition instruments won't be available forever, or even as a special order. In the case of our Honduras mahogany limited edition instruments, we'll build a few instruments a month over the course of a year or two.
Once the wood is gone, we'll stop building this particular instrument, so the supply is limited, and we expect demand to be very high. Why?
Because the look, and the sound, of a Honduras mahogany dulcimer is superior to practically any other variety of wood. The golden color of a Honduras mahogany instrument practically glows. The color is beautiful now, and it will only become richer with age.
The tone quality of Honduras mahogany is unparalleled. It is rich, and has a bright, clear tone quality. It is gentle, and it still projects with authority, especially when it is played aggressively. Honduras mahogany has the sweetness of hickory, the volume of Sitka spruce, and the warmth of walnut or red cedar.
We're not making this particular dulcimer with scroll heads, or electric pickups, or even with fret or position dot options. Even the tone holes are predetermined, and are not an option. What you see here is what we offer in this wood, so we hope you like it!
