This spirited Sousa favorite is another publication in Dr. William D. Revelli's acclaimed series of distinctive march interpretations. In his years with the University of Michigan band, Dr. Revelli used this edition of "The Liberty Bell" to thrill audiences all over the world. It retains the flavor of the original, but adds that special "Revelli touch".

Technical Notes: The 1st percussion part is for snare drum and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is for cymbals and triangle. The keyboard percussion part is labeled "mallet percussion" in the score. The keyboard percussion part lists chimes, bells, and vibraphone as suggested instruments.
Notes to the director: The editing of this march is unique in its attention to fine detail. Every articulation, dynamic and breath marking has been carefully and clearly indicated. In an effort to clarify the interpretation, the second and third strains have been written out, instead of the traditional use of repeats and first and second endings. At measure 84, note the following: Flutes and Piccolo play 8vb (to measure 101) the 1st time through, as it is the 2nd time; the low brass and woodwinds play pianissimo the 1st time through, fortissimo the 2nd time; trumpets and trombones are muted the 1st time through, open the 2nd time; the dashed slurs (ties) indicate "no breath". At measure 110, note the following: Piccolo and oboes play 2nd time only; the 1st time through, the interpretation observes all dynamic changes (piano to mezzo forte), the 2nd time is played fortissimo sempre (fortissimo throughout). It is suggested that, in addition to (or as a substitute for) the chimes, bells, and Vibraphone, a school or church bell be used. A large bell (approximately 3' tall and 2' wide) with a full ringing tone would be best. Careful attention to all details will insure a worthwhile educational experience and a performance that will thrill audiences over and over.
