This could possibly be Alfred Reed's most played work for band and is considered one of the giants of standard band literature. James Curnow's fine transcription for young band puts this important piece well within reach of most developing groups. Treat your younger players to one of the classics.

Technical Notes: A note from Mr. Alfred Reed: The appearance of this new version of a work that has seemingly become a classic of contemporart band literature, affords me a welcome opportunity of voicing my deepest appreciation to the many conductors and players throughout the world who, by their efforts during the 34 years since its inception, have kept this music alive in the active band repertoire. My gratitude towards them can only be unbounded.

This new version by James Curnow, made with my full approval and participation, represents an attempt to bring this music to a performance level attainable by younger performing groups, with a minimal loss of musical detail and maximum retention of the original musical texture and its effect. In doing so, the publisher and I have been guided solely by the hope that many more of our younger players will be able to experience this music first-hand, so to speak, as active participants rather than merely passive listeners, and thereby (hopefully) continue to learn and enjoy the thrill of music making!

"A Festival Prelude" was orriginally written for performance by a university group of players, and I do recall there having been some difficulties with some of the more demanding textures of the work at that time, 34 years ago. I also recall not offering the work for publication for nearly four years after its first performance, despite the willingness of the publisher I was then connected with to accept it, on the ground that I did not feel there were a sufficient number of high school bands in the country who could cope with it as a whole. Today we find not only many high school groups, but even junior high school groups (especially in Japan), playing the original version with great success. It is for this reason that I feel the existence of this new version, giving the individual director the option of "adjusting" the technical demand of this music to the abilities of his performers at any one time, to be justifiable and, hopefully, of help in his daily endeavors to achieve the goals of of a successful instrumental musical educational experience on the part of his student performers.
