Finale From "Lincolnshire Posy"

"The Lost Lady Found" is the final, most conservative setting of Grainger's "musical wildflowers" masterpiece for band, "Lincolnshire Posy". Developing bands can now play an ideal adaptation of this classic band repertiore. Johnnie Vinson's careful scoring eliminates some of the extreme range demands of the original, yet is extremely accurate in retaining Grainger's magnificent compositional genius throughout. This work of merit is a must-have for every concert band library!

Technical Notes: The keyboard percussion part is labeled "mallet percussion" on the score. This includes parts for bells, xylophone, and optional chimes and handbells parts. The 1st percussion part is marked for snare drum. The 2nd percussion part is marked for suspended cymbal, and bass drum. Performance notes: Like many composers, Percy Grainger (1882-1961) was an avid student of folk songs. His works capture the creative nuances of folk song performance. Quite often, rhythms and tempi in Grainger's music are indicated with colorful English phrases rather than the traditional Italian terminology. "Finale From "Lincolnshire Posy"" is an adaptation of the final movement from Percy Grainger's masterwork for band, "Lincolnshire Posy". Using "The Lost Lady Found" as its theme, this is the most conventional setting of the six folk songs Grainger used in his "bunch of wildflowers" known as "Lincolnshire Posy." It would be presumputuous to suggest that Grainger's original work needs improvement. The purpose of this adaptation is to simply make this wonderful music accessible to younger, less experienced players, and to bands with somewhat limited instrumentation. This was accomplished by eliminating extreme high and low range demands, and by including numerous cues for instruments which might be missing or weak in some bands. The primanry performance concern should focus on Grainger's original concept of sound for this piece. If complete instrumentation is available and all players are capable, the indicated cues should not be used. Like Grainger's original score, this adaptation is set in D Dorian mode. Teach the sound of the Dorian mode by asking students to play a D Dorian concert scale using the indicated key signature of C Major concert. Although some English terms such as "short" and "detached" have been retained from Grainger's original manuscript, other terms (such as "louden," which might appear unclear and add confusion to young players) have been replaced with the more familiar Italian terminology, with clarifying dynamics throughout.
