American Folk Fantasy

"American Folk Fantasy" is a medley in overture style, which includes three well-known American folk songs. The first section utilizes "'Round Her Neck She Wears A Yellow Ribbon" in an up-beat, march-like rendition. The second tune "All The Pretty Little Horses ('Hushabye')", provides a lyrical touch to the middle section. What follows is a stirring setting of the famous Shaker melody, "Simple Gifts", which ultimately rushes to a grandiose conclusion.| |  |

Technical Notes: The opening tempo should be played in an easy, lilting march style which allows accurate division of the beat without sounding rushed. A slight marcato style is appropriate on all notes not slurred. The first section should build gradually by the addition of various instrumental groups until the full statement of the melody beginning at measure 41.
Bring out the alto saxophone at measure 68. Be imaginative in working out dynamic and tempo nuances beginning at measure 70. Here in this middle section, the brass and woodwind choirs must strive for a legato style.
The third section, which begins at measure 89, must also be legato, and be sure to bring out the melody at all times. The "Grandioso" at measure 115 should be slightly marcato in contrast to the previous section. Exaggerate the ritardando toward the end and bring out the timpani solo for a dramatic finish.
