The joyous sound of the West Indies "limbo" dance belies the horrific conditions that inspired it. The "limbo" comes from the "middle passage" slave trade between Africa and the West Indies. Each slave had a below deck space of about 6 feet by 1 foot, which allowed little headroom. This is where they spent most of their time on the often rough and always torturous passage to the new world. Those who survived the journey apparently developed the "limbo" dance to demonstrate the way the slaves aboard ship had to maneuver in their coffin-sized quarters.

Estimated Performance Time: 2:10
Technical Notes: The keyboard percussion part is labeled "Mallet Percussion" and is for the xylophone. The timpani part is written for two timpani. The 1st percussion part is for snare drum and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is for maracas and claves. The piano part is labeled "Piano Accompaniment". Note to the Conductor: While the score calls for a snare drum with "snare off", you can add or substitute other types of drums that you have have available, such as bongos, congas, etc. You may also with to substitute a "Shaker" for the maracas. Bells may be substituted for the xylophone, although the energetic click of the xylophone is preferred. If your xylophone player can do it, you may want to add rolls to the whole notes and half notes in measures 37 through 42. The trombones should be able to execute nice "slurs" with getting a glissando effect in measures 37, 38 and 39 since the slide is moving "in" while the note is moving "down". This piece may provide a good opportunity for young trombone players to begin to understand this concept.
