Once again, Mark Williams has used his expert skills and given us an excellent transcription of a masterwork. This arrangement of the finale from Tchaikovsky's "Second Symphony" (the "Little Russian") is a perfect way to introduce students to music of the Russian Romantic period as well as entertain audiences.

Technical Notes: The bells/xylophone part is labeled "mallets" in the score. The 1st percussion part is for snare drum and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is for crash cymbals, tambourine, triangle, and tam-tam.
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) is perhaps Russia's most beloved composer. His "Nutcracker", "1812 Overture", "Swan Lake", "Capriccio Italien", "Romeo And Juliet", six symphonies, and many other works are performed regularly all over the world. This arrangement of the finale to his "Little Russian" symphony (Symphony No. 2) finally makes this masterwork accessible to school concert bands. This symphony is partially based on folk songs from the Ukraine (a region sometimes affectionately called "Little Russia"). The opening theme of this movement is a folk song called "The Crane". Careful attention to dynamics will make the performance of this work much more effective and exciting. This piece is a great introduction to music of the Russian Romantic period.
