Lincoln Portrait

Aaron Copland remains unsurpassed as the composer most identified with American orchestral music. A winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and many other honors, Copland tried hard to bring the perspective of a composer of and from the United States to his music. He thought that as a "native" composer, he had to be "part of a nation that has a musical profile of its own", and to have in his background "some sense of musical culture and a basis in folk or popular art".

"Lincoln Portrait" shows just how American Copland could be. When he was asked to do a musical portrait of an American hero, he chose to illustrate with his work Abraham Lincoln?and to deal with the greatness of the man through chosen excerpts of Lincoln's own words.

The words that Copland chose, from Lincoln's speeches and letters of the Civil War era, hit head-on the central issues of the struggles for justice and against slavery of the period. ("It is the eternal struggle between two principles?the very nature of democracy.") In his score, Copland pictures these ideals with musical techniques that were part and parcel of his style of the time and that have since become staples of the work of composers of music for stage, film, and television. He manipulates the sounds of the orchestra into slowly growing swaths of sound and pulls in quotations from American folk tunes to underscore the words.
